Water Damage Clean-up to Prevent Molds

Water damage can be devastating. The damages that water build up brings to the home and property are immensely difficult to restore in the absence of early action. Water damage clean up is essential to prevent the growth of molds. The following are some tips in cleaning up water damage.

1. When books and papers are soaked up in water brought about by damaged faucet or natural disasters such as flood, it is important to segregate the valuable items from the non-valuable items. Non-valuable books and papers must be discarded. Valuable items must be photocopied before discarding them.

2. When carpets are affected by water, the water must be removed using the water extraction vacuum. Ambient humidity levels must be reduced using dehumidifier and the drying process must be accelerated using the fans.

3. When the damaged material is the concrete or cinder block surfaces, the water must be removed with water extraction vacuum and the drying process must be accelerated using the fans or dehumidifiers.

4. When hard surfaces or porous flooring such as vinyl, ceramic tile, and linoleum is damaged by water, the wet surface should be vacuumed or damped wipe with water and mild detergent and allowed to dry. If necessary, scrubbing the floor would be an advantage. Check the under flooring to make sure that it is dry.

5. For non-porous and hard surfaces such as plastics and metals, it is necessary to vacuum or damp wipe with water and mild detergent and allow to dry; scrubbing is also essential.

6. For upholstered furniture, remove water using the water extraction vacuum and accelerate the drying process with dehumidifiers, fans, and/or heaters.
